If you would like to listen to the directions of this lesson, rather than read below, please feel free to click play :)
Here you are going to learn about Natural Disasters. You are going to find a link to a video, Natural Disasters, below. Please follow the instructions on how to go about completing this lesson.
**Each time you click on a link below, you will have to press the 'back' button on your web browser, as each new page will not open in a new window. Sorry for the inconvenience!
1. I'd like you to take a few minutes and think about any weather related storms you may have had experience with. These could be personal experiences you've had, or something big happening somewhere in the world that you have heard about through friends, news, or radio. Think about what you did in the situation, if this was a personal experience. Think about how others must be feeling as they go through something, if this was a weather related storm you've only heard about happening somewhere else in the world. I'd like it if you could share your thoughts with the rest of the class by posting any comments onto this discussion, http://sun5hin3.wikispaces.com/message/view/Natural+Disasters+Lesson/40360273. I have already started a discussion. Feel free to reply to what I have written or begin a new discussion. You do not need to leave your name, this can stay anonymous if you choose.
2. After you have left a post under the discussion board, your next task it to watch a video on Natural Disasters. You are going to watch this video two times. The first time you watch the video, please only watch, listen, or read the text that goes along with it. I do not want you to focus so much on getting down any notes for this first time around. Just listen, watch or read (if you choose the closed-captioning feature) and really listen about the disasters, reflecting upon your experience or others experiences you've posted or read from the discussion in number 1. Once you watch it once, now it is time to watch it a second time. This time I want you to take notes as you go through the video. You may choose to take notes by writing them down on a piece of paper, typing them into a computer program (Microsoft Word, for example) or using the quick-note feature. However you choose to take notes, these notes are going to have to somehow get onto Natural Disasters Notes. You may have to copy-paste them in, or re-type them in depending on how you chose to take notes. Click here to add-on quick-note https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/46. Please choose a color otherthan black to distinguish your notes from the other notes posted.
As you watch the video, pay close attention to these questions:
A. What is a hurricane? How does it form? What causes the damage? B. What is a thunderstorm? C. What is the most violent natural disaster? Why? How fast do the winds get? D. What is a winter storm? What do winter storms cause? E. How is a flood created? How much water needs to be present to be a flood? F. What is a drought? Why would this be considered a natural disaster? G. What waves are present during a tsunami? How are they caused? What is the most common cause of a tsunami? How fast can they be? H. Where do earthquakes occur? How much damage is done depends on what? I. How are volcanoes created? What can they cause? J. What is the difference between a wild fire and contained burning? Where are wildfires likely to occur? How are they started? Why are they difficult to put out? K. During a natural disaster, what is the best thing you can do at home? What should you have at home?
If you choose to use this as an outline, simply copy and paste it into your quick-note toolbar or onto the Natural Disaster Note page and answer each question as it comes up in the video. Again, you do not need to post your name onto your notes.
3. Once you are finished watching the video twice, and you have taken notes and posted them onto the class page, it is now time to present what you learned in a new, more creative way! Individually, you are going to create a different presentation to show what you learned, or the notes from number 2, either in a Google presentation, a wordle, a prezi or by writing a paper of the important notes. It is your choice how you wish to present your information! Please let your classmates know how you are going to present your information here. Once you finish with your presentation, you are going to go back to the page where you have explained how you are going to present your information (above) and embed your presentation right onto that page to share with the rest of us. This time, please post your name so that we know who is presenting what. If you have any problems getting your presentation into the Natural Disaster Presentation page, please begin a discussion asking your question there, so that I can help you embed your presentation.
4. Once your presentation is completed, please reflect upon your task and assess yourself using this rubric. Please upload the rubric, once you have assessed yourself, onto Google docs and share it with me.
Please note that if you choose to create a wordle of the information from the video you will complete a different rubric than the one above. Please click here for a wordle rubric
I really appreciate you all taking the time to complete this lesson with me. I hope that you enjoyed it & learned something new along the way! I encourage all of you to leave me comments or suggestions for the future of this lesson in this discussion page: http://sun5hin3.wikispaces.com/message/view/Natural+Disasters+Lesson/40361355.
